Celebrating 40 years!
For 40 years, GOLES has been building the power of low-income residents of the Lower East Side/Loisaida. We were formed at a time when widespread landlord neglect and abandonment of buildings threatened the future of this neighborhood and its residents, and we began organizing tenants to ensure that they could stay in their homes and community. Today, different forces – gentrification and its attendant displacement – are threatening the future of this community and its long-term residents. The context of our work may have changed over the past four decades, but the need to stand with the low-income residents who made this neighborhood what it is today has not.
Over time, GOLES has expanded the focus of its work to include different, but often interconnected, issue-areas in order to address the various needs of those we serve and the community we aim to preserve, and to more fully realize the mission and beliefs that got us started in 1977.
This year, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary, check back on this page as well as our Upcoming Events to learn about how we’re celebrating this milestone, and how you can be a part of it.
