Eviction Prevention & Tenants’ Rights Counseling

Housing and Tenants’ Rights Counseling

GOLES provides housing counseling to tenants who live in rent-regulated, Public Housing, Mitchell-Lama, Limited Equity Co-ops (HDFCs), and Section 8 apartments. Counseling covers tenant’s rights; help with affordable housing applications and public housing income “recertification”; assistance communicating with and responding to landlords; fighting landlord harassment; housing court assistance; responding to eviction notices; and legal referrals.

Tenant Association Assistance

GOLES works with tenants to organize and strengthen tenant associations in their buildings. By working together, tenant associations are able to obtain needed repairs, stop landlord harassment, stay in their apartments, and work with tenants across the neighborhood and city to stop displacement and gentrification.

HPD Housing Ambassadors

As members of HPD’s Housing Ambassadors Program, GOLES partners with the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development to help Lower East Side residents prepare for and apply to affordable housing lotteries. GOLES also helps applicants who are selected to prepare for housing lottery interviews.
